Apple Pie Time!

Apple Pie Time!

We have been learning all about apples. We started out our unit with apple tasting. We had slices of red, yellow, and green apples for the children to taste. After tasting each variety, the children filled out a simple sheet with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down.

Throughout the week we learned about the life cycle of the apple, beginning with seed.

After reading Apple Pie ABC by Alison Murray, we made mini apple pies as a culminating activity. This is in a four-year-old preschool class, but I have also used this activity with a two-year-old class. This recipe makes enough for 12 children.

Materials needed:

Keebler mini pie crusts

2 cans apple pie filling

Crumble topping (Combine 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar. Add 1/2 cup butter, cut into small pieces. Use pastry cutter or fork to mix, until a crumbly mixture is formed.)

Spoons for each child

Cookie sheet/pan

Directions:

Have the children spoon some of the apple pie filling into their pie crust. Sprinkle the crumble mixture on top. Bake at 350° for 10-12 minutes. Enjoy!
