Creating and Maintaining a Snail Farm
At Bush Babies Family Day Care, the class helped to build a snail farm that was then filled with snails purchased from a pet store!
Caring for snails
The kiddos learned how snails like moist soil and lots of cool places that are shaded to hide out and relax. The students learned snails love fruits and veggies that can be placed on a little food bowl for snails. Also, snails need calcium to keep their shells healthy, so adding a bit of cuttlefish or dried crushed eggshells to the side of the dish is important too. The class had a lovely time assembling a snail farm full of everything snails need to be comfortable!
Gently handling snails
Everyone was sure to clean their hands before and after handling snails. This kept students from making the snails sick or getting sick themselves after handling the snails. Having a snail farm was such fun!
