Dirt Exploration Activity for KidsAt the Children's Garden Preschool they had fun exploring what they could find within dirt. This activity is perfect for Earth Day (on April 22nd) or makes a fun Summer activity too when everyone is spending time outside and could consider what is in the ground!

Materials Needed for the Dirt Exploration Activity

To do this activity you will need:

  • A small shovel
  • A clump of dirt outside (like in a garden)
  • A cup to hold the dirt
  • A placemat/tray for any dirt that spills
  • A little magnifying glass
  • A notepad
  • A pencil or pen
  • Gloves (optional if you don't want to get your hands dirty)

How to Do the Dirt Exploration Activity

You don't need all this, just a good cup and a magnifying glass work great!To do the dirt exploration activity follow these steps:

  1. Go outside and use your small shovel to dig up some dirt and put it in your cup.
  2. Go inside and begin putting your hands in the dirt and taking little pieces out.
  3. Use your magnifying glass to study anything interesting you find, like worms or bugs.
  4. Write on your notepad some of the neat things you find.
  5. Take the dirt and the things you found in it back outside and put everything back in the Earth.
  6. Wash your hands and review your notes of all the fascinating things in the dirt!
