The preschool class at Resurrection Catholic School and Preschool in Cherry Hill, New Jersey celebrated Groundhog Day!
All of the preschoolers enjoyed learning about the history of Ground Day itself, groundhogs, the way weather functions, and what shadows are. The kids all had a blast when they created shadows for their groundhogs via a fun craft activity! The students even made different predictions about the most famous groundhog–Punxsutawney Phil–and whether they thought he would see his shadow or not.
How Groundhog Day Works
The story famously goes that if the groundhog sees his shadow on February 2nd he goes back into his burrow and there is winter for six more weeks. However, if the groundhog does not see his shadow, we can expect fairer weather sooner than the official start of Spring! Hopefully, an early Spring is on the horizon! With this in mind, students can do their groundhog crafts in a way where their groundhog would see his shadow, or not, depending on if they want Spring to arrive sooner or later!
