Learning About Desert Biomes

Learning About Desert Biomes

At The Gardner School of Nashville the children learned about different, "Biomes," that exist on our planet. They were told about cold Arctic biomes, wet rainforest biomes, and dry desert biomes.

After learning about desert biomes and what kinds of animals live in them, the students drew their own deserts full of animals found in that biome!

Learning About and Drawing Desert Biomes

Learning About Desert Biomes

To teach your students about desert biomes, first instruct them on how a desert is a place that receives less than 10 inches (25 centimeters) of rain per year. This results in deserts being very hot in the daytime and very cold in the nighttime as they lack many plants. They are not without wildlife, however!

Many exciting animals can be found in the desert that your students can draw including but not limited to:

  • Bobcats
  • Coyotes
  • Jack Rabbits
  • Mountain Lions
  • Red-Tailed Hawk
  • Hummingbirds
  • Barn Owl
  • Turkey Vulture
  • Rattlesnake
  • Desert Tortise
  • Iguana
  • Horned Lizard
  • Black Widow Spider
  • Bees
  • Fire Ants
  • Scorpions
  • Red Spotted Toad
  • Woodhouse's Toad

Drawing these animals among the sand and cacti will be fun and educational for your students!
