Sorting 2D and 3D Objects Activity

At Cadence Academy Preschool, Charleston, they had a fantastic time sorting objects that were two-dimensional and three-dimensional.

Sorting for fun

The kids learned how, "2D Objects Are Flat," and that, "3D Objects Are Fat." It was a fun rhyme that also helped to get across the point of how a 2D object is different than one that is 3D and not simply a flat object, like a ball versus a small square block.

This is an easy activity to do with your own children, you just need two spots to place 2D versus 3D objects and notes instructing the kids where each item should go. Then, take an assortment of items found around the house that are 2D as well as 3D and put them in a big pile for the children to sort through and determine what item goes in which pile. Should the children struggle to figure out what is 2D or 3D, simply remind them of the rhyme and that should help them to figure out everything!
