Teaching responsibility with "Bear Bucks"

I have my students bring in their teddy bears for the week. I use it as lesson in responsibility. The students have to take their bears with them to centers. The are given bear bucks to buy things and hire Bear sitters. The children have so much fun spending their Bear Bucks!. We even set up a Bear Bank to keep up with their Bear Bucks. We incorporate math, literacy and other learning skills in this unit. The kids have so much fun with their teddy bears! The eat lunch with them and take a nap with them. We end up have this turn into a 2 week unit. This one one of my first and favorite units to teach. We turn home center into a Bear Hospital. Science cent becomes all about panda bears! Block center has bears added and I challenge the kids to build caves or dens for their teddy bears. For a special treat we make what I call "Bear Chow." This is basically a trail mix made with gummy bears, nuts(if no allergies, marshmallows, M&M's, and gold fish)
