After reading the story Ten Apples Up Top by Dr.Seuss we set out to create our own rendition. The integration of literacy into activities further extends the life of the story and in turn fosters creative thinking.
This STEM challenge encouraged the children to try stacking as many apples as they can using the play dough to bind the two objects. Open ended engineering activities are designed to be hands on explorations with endless possibilities.
The beauty of it all is that the product of STEM challenges, all look different and through malleable properties of play dough make it fun for investigation and exploration as well as secretly building up strength in all tiny hand muscles, making them ready for pencil and scissor control.
When the children are counting the apples just like the story it also teaches them basic math skills. The educational and developmental benefits are endless through invitations that integrate literacy, STEM, and sensory play.
