Veteran's Day Poppy-Styled Umbrella Painting Activity

At Little Mini Lighthouse Family Daycare, they honored our veterans this recent Veteran's Day by painting clear umbrellas to make them look like red poppies.

What do red poppies symbolize on Veteran's Day?

Red poppies are often associated with Veteran's Day because the red poppy came to symbolize the blood that was shed during battle following the publication of the wartime poem “In Flanders Fields.” The poem was written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, M.D. while serving on the front lines. Now they are often displayed on the holiday to show support for our veterans.

How the students made their own poppy-styled umbrellas

The kiddos used red paint and their paintbrushes to spread the color all over their clear umbrellas. They made the umbrellas look just like red poppies and then displayed them outside with bundles of those specific flowers to express their support for our veterans. Happy Veteran's Day to all our veterans!
