geometric shape making activity
Hello fellow educators!
I am currently working on designing a comprehensive maths unit focused on 2D shapes and geometry. As part of this unit, I want to move beyond simple worksheets and give my students a hands-on, creative opportunity to construct their own picture or artwork using various geometric shapes (such as triangles, rectangles, squares, circles, hexagons, and rhombuses).
Unit Goals & Learning Objectives
My main goal is to help students connect abstract geometric concepts with visual art. Specifically, I want them to be able to:
Compose complex images from simple geometric building blocks (e.g., using a rectangle and triangles to build a house, or circles and ovals to create animals).
Ideas for the Activity
I am considering a few different ways to run this lesson depending on prep time and student needs:
Paper Cut-outs & Collage: Providing pre-cut colored paper shapes where students glue them onto cardstock to build a landscape, robot, or animal.
