Math in Action: Number, dots, and finger matching activity

Soft start activity: During our soft start time, I provide students with a hands-on math activity in which they match cards representing quantities in three different ways: tos, numerals, and fingers. Students are given a set of cards that ianclude different representations of numbers, such as a card with numeral, a card showing the corresponding number of dots, and a card showing the same quantity using fingers. Their goal is to find and match the three cards that represent the same number. This activity provoides students with an egaging and meaningful way to practice early number sense while transitioning into the school day. Because students can choose this activity independently during soft start, they ahave an opportunity to begin their mornign calmly while engaging in purposeful learning.
