At Calhoun Early Childhood Center the children in Ms. Anita and Ms. Amy's class had a, "Wacky Wednesday," where they dripped vinegar mixed with food coloring on baking soda to create a chemical reaction that also made for beautiful artwork!

Materials Needed for the Colorful Chemical Reactions Activity

To do this activity you will need:

  • A plastic container
  • Plastic cups
  • Baking Soda
  • Food coloring AKA food dye
  • Vinegar
  • Eyedroppers

How to Do the Colorful Chemical Reactions Activity

To do the colorful chemical reactions activity follow these steps:

  1. Dump and spread the baking soda into the plastic container
  2. Pour a small amount of vinegar into all of the plastic cups
  3. Put different colored drops of food coloring in each plastic cup full of vinegar and mix it in.
  4. Take your eyedropper and use it to suck-up some colored vinegar.
  5. Squirt the colored vinegar onto the baking soda in the container and watch it fizzle and make art!
  6. Keep squirting different colored vinegar amounts onto the baking soda in the container until you are done!
