Friction Demonstrating Activity For Kids

At Starting Blocks Preschool they did an activity where they learned about friction via sliding different items down a ramp!

Materials Needed for the Friction Demonstration Activity

To do this friction demonstration activity you need the following:

  • A ramp--this can be any flat smooth surface you elevate and tilt or some plastic tubes, etc.
  • Legos
  • Plastic letters
  • Balls
  • Toy Cars
  • Anything else you want to test

How to do the Friction Demonstration Activity

To do the friction demonstration activity follow these steps:

  1. Set your ramp up so that it has a good incline/decline.
  2. Take each toy item and put it at the top of the ramp, discuss how friction will impact how much it does or does not go down the ramp.
  3. Observe how toys with lots of bumps and ridges such as legos have more friction compared to toys that have circular parts such as balls or the toy card with wheels
  4. Discuss other items you didn't test and what kind of friction they might have!
