This activity was created to help Pre-K4 students develop their number recognition, counting, letter recognition, and fine motor skills through fun, hands-on learning experiences. The activity combines a fire safety theme with interactive math and literacy activities to keep students engaged while allowing them to learn through play.

For the math portion, I created a “Roll the Dice and Put Out the Fire” activity. Students begin by rolling a die and identifying the number of dots shown on the die. They then look for the fire that has the matching number of dots. Once they find the correct match, students use a water mister or spray bottle to put out their fire. This activity encourages students to practice counting, recognizing quantities, and matching numbers while participating in a playful, fire-themed learning experience.

The goal of this activity is to help students strengthen their understanding of numbers and quantities in a way that feels exciting and meaningful. Rather than simply looking at numbers on a worksheet, students are actively involved in the learning process by rolling, counting, matching, and spraying. The hands-on component helps support different learning styles and gives students an opportunity to practice important early math skills through movement and exploration. It also encourages students to develop independence, follow directions, and build confidence as they identify the correct number and complete the task.

For the literacy and sensory portion, I added fire-themed alphabet letters that allow students to explore letter recognition and letter formation. Students can use their fingers to trace the letters, helping them become more familiar with the shapes and movements needed to form each letter. This sensory experience provides an opportunity for students to engage with letters in a tactile way rather than only seeing them on paper. Tracing the letters helps strengthen fine motor control, hand-eye coordination, and the small muscles in their hands that are important for future writing development.

The fire alphabet activity also supports early literacy skills by encouraging students to recognize letters and become familiar with their shapes. Teachers can extend the activity by asking students to name each letter, identify its sound, or think of a word that begins with that letter. These additional questions help connect letter recognition to phonological awareness and vocabulary development.

Overall, these activities provide an engaging way to incorporate math, literacy, sensory exploration, and fine motor development into the Pre-K4 classroom. By combining a familiar and exciting fire theme with hands-on materials, students are encouraged to participate, explore, and learn while developing essential school-readiness skills. The activities also provide opportunities for teachers to observe students’ progress in counting, matching quantities, recognizing letters, following directions, and using their hands with increasing control. Most importantly, students can build these foundational skills in a fun, interactive environment that encourages curiosity, active participation, and a love of learning.
