We followed this fantastic tutorial to make folded bird fans in a small group of children aged 5-6 for an art challenge. We asked the children to think about how the patterns they drew on the paper might change once the paper was folded, and showed a few examples. The children enjoyed choosing combinations of paper colour and patterns to make their bird beautiful and bright.
Getting the concertina folds neat enough was the most challenging part for the children. To reduce the need for cut out shapes, we used pen to colour in the beaks. We didn't have any lolly sticks so instead used paper straws that we already had a supply - this still worked well. In fact, using the straws meant that the birds can be "stood up" in e.g. pen pots, so they can be enjoyed as a decoration as well.
