Fun With Shapes
My classroom has been having a lot of fun learning shapes by playing with blocks. I print out designs and the students have to make the shapes by building the individual blocks together. The staff makes their own as well and we use our words and AAC devices to practice geometry vocabulary, asking each other to borrow shapes and pieces to create the puzzle. This also teaches sharing and communication skills while learning shapes and solving problems. We are also learning colors at the same time as the shapes have different colors so the kids will name the color and shape of the pieces. Then, at the end, when the puzzle is complete, I have the students count all the pieces they used to make their puzzle so that they are learning one to one correspondence as well as rote counting.
