Hei Tiki- A traditional taonga from the NZ Maori. New Zealand Art
A Tiki is a traditional Maori taonga.
We used the NZ artist Lester Hall as an example and looked at examples of his work then each class made their won version.
We used a range of materials and colours selected by the students to cover the tiki and then went around the outline with a bold black marker to clearly mark out the individual parts of the tiki.
We traced the original tiki and then used an OHP (overhead projector) to enlarged it to the preferred size. Each of our tiki were 1.2 m
We copied the tiki onto paper that was quite heavy so it could support the collage materials that the students would be adding as part of the process. In this particular image coloured tissue paper was used but other materials that were used included: glitter, stickers, crayon and dye, paint, pom poms, wool, magazine images, newspaper and other coloured papers.
