Learning About Owls and Studying Owl Pellets
At St. John the Baptist Catholic School, the kiddos learned all about owls and actually got to examine real owl pellets they took apart and studied!
What is an owl pellet?
When owls eat certain items sometimes they have parts that can't be digested. Things such as teeth, skulls, claws, and feathers are too dangerous to pass through the rest of the owl's digestive tract. Therefore, the owl's gizzard compacts all of this into a tight ball, and the owl regurgitates it, resulting in what is known as an owl pellet! It is gross but also fascinating!
Taking apart owl pellets
The kids who wanted to handle an owl pellet were excited to take one apart and look at it. They noted what they found--bones, feathers, etc. It was kind of, "Yucky," some kids said, but they also found it really neat.
