Bird Beaks - Form and Function
Our 1st and 2nd graders used everyday tools to explore the form and function of bird beaks. 4 stations were set up; pasta shells, rice in playdough, colored water, legos floating in water. Each student was assigned a beak that they would rotate with, noting which food was easiest to eat with their 'beak'; pliers, tweezers, sieves, pipettes. After the activity, students gathered to learn what bird was represented by the beak they were using; pliers = nut and seed eaters like parrots, tweezers = bug eaters like wood peckers, sieves = fish eaters like pelicans, pipettes = nectar eaters like humming birds.
