Exploding Pumpkins!

Exploding Pumpkins!
Children worked in pairs for this activity. Each pair were given a hallowed-out pumpkin, along with a half cup of vinegar, a quarter cup of baking soda, a small cup with dish soap (approximately 1/8 cup) and food coloring. I began by asking the children what they thought would happen prior to us putting anything in the pumpkin. Once some hypotheses were generated, we began with the vinegar, next was the soap, third was the food coloring (I asked prior to the children putting each item in what they thought may happen). Finally, they put the baking soda in and watched the reaction. The children loved this activity! It was language rich and very hands on. I always like to find activities that the children are doing on their own and this is always a favorite! After the reaction was complete, we talked about our prior guesses and whether or not any were correct
