In a Dark Dark Wood
Students love to draw their own pictures! They also love telling stories. This activity is a great way to do both things while working on blends. As a way to further learning our first blend and to go along with our Halloween theme students illustrate their own book.
Students learn the 'ar' blend earlier in the day. As a class we brainstorm words that start or have the 'ar' blend as part of their word. Later in the day we use an emergent reader they find 'ar' in the word dark throughout the book. Students then follow guided drawings to illustrate the book By drawing our own pictures we also work on shape identification and building as we work our way through. Students are then instructed to 'read' someone they love the story at home. We talk about how pictures can help us with the words that we don't know. I also express that telling it in a spooky voice helps make the book more exciting.
Traditional poem
In a Dark Dark Wood
In the dark, dark wood,
There was a dark, dark house.
And in the dark, dark house,
there was a dark, dark room.
And in the dark, dark room,
There was a dark, dark cupboard.
And in the dark, dark cupboard,
There was a dark dark shelf.
And on the dark, dark shelf,
There was a dark, dark box.
And in the dark, dark box,
there was a big white ghost!
