Senses: Smell. Use a Read Aloud to help use your sense of smell. Read "Are you my Mother?" in the Dr. Seuss series

Read "Are you my mother"? A Dr. Seuss Book about a baby bird that falls out of his nest while his mother goes in search of food. He comes across animate and inanimate objects and asks "Are you my mother."

I have used this activity for years, whenever we study Senses.

Materials you will need:

six small film containers (or anything that cannot be see thru)

six cotton balls

three scents

I like to use: lemon, coffee, peppermint

(please make sure the scents are non harmful ck ingredients and differentiate in you have students with an allergy to any of the scents you use)

Soak two cotton balls with same scent.

Give each student a container. Have them smell their own container and then the other containers.

Pick six students.

Three students are the mothers and the other three are the baby bird. the mothers are facing the baby birds. The baby birds say "Are you my mother?" and smell the mothers containers.

When they smell matching scent they have found their mother.
