Teaching Summer Camp During Covid-19
As an educator personal interaction is a critical part of relating to my students. In the current environment of Covid-19 with the requirements for social distancing, lack of personal contact, and heightened focus on hygiene finding creative solutions to engage with students is even more important than ever. I have recently completed the first of multiple week-long summer camps I teach at a local environmental center. My original curriculum involved lots of interaction, team and group activities, scavenger hunts, and a week full of fun. Having to cut my class in half to only 10 students and eliminating all activities that required participants to touch each other or the same things was certainly a challenge. The other thing that became very apparent is the mental challenges that are created in the students when they have to follow such rigid procedures around distancing, sanitation, and wearing a mask. We made it through one week in this new world. Hopefully this will not last too much longer.
