Making Rocket Ships Using Tangrams + Free Printable
Cross-curricular lesson between science and math.
In a cross-curricular lesson with math and science. We learned about 2D shapes previously this week in our math class. In science class, we were learning about the moon. We have been discussing how people travel to the moon and why they explore the moon. We began today's lesson with a video of a real NASA launch of a rocket ship. We then read the fiction story "The Way Back Home" By Oliver Jeffers. After reading the story we learned what a tangram is. How it is made up of 7 shapes: 2 large triangles, 1 medium triangle, 2 small triangles, 1 square, and 1 parrellagram. and you can create many other shapes using tangrams. Students were provided with a paper tangram set, each shape is a different color. They were also given a moon and an Earth to cut out and a dark piece of construction paper. Students were then instructed to create a rocketship going from the earth to the moon with their tangram pieces.
