Learning About Recycling for the, "Green Team!"
At Valley Christian School-Auburn, they have a group of students dedicated to learning about and engaging in recycling. This group of kiddos is known as the, "Green Team." They have gathered-up all kinds of old plastic and metal for the class and learned about the proper way to recycle plastic bags as well (they do not go in normal recycling). It has been wonderful for these kids to learn all about why recycling is important and your class can work to learn about recycling and put their knowledge to use too!
Fun facts about recycling
Here are some facts about recycling that show why it is so important:
*The average person has the opportunity to recycle more than 25,000 cans in a lifetime.
*Recycling is the top action society can do to simultaneously improve: the environment, the economy, sustainable manufacturing and to prevent waste from going into oceans.
*Currently only 21.4% of things that can be recycled in America are actually being recycled--the rest gets thrown away.
*Over 87% of Americans have access to curbside or drop-off paper recycling programs.
*In 2009, Americans threw away almost 9 million tons of glass. That could fill enough tractor trailers to stretch from NYC to LA--and back!
