Soda and Mentos Experiment
At Cornerstone Kids Preschool they did the classic experiment of combining Mentos and soda to watch how it reacted. Various sodas had Mentos dropped in them and the kids observed how it would make the soda bubble-up and explode (which is why it was smart to do the activity outside! Different sodas were tested and it was found Diet Coke worked the best.
How the experiment works
To do this experiment all you need are Mentos and carbonated beverages. Any drink with carbonation can work, including seltzer. However, diet sodas such as Diet Coke/Diet Pepsi/etc. tend to cause a bigger reaction as they have sweeteners and more carbonation which results in big explosions! If you do this experiment with your own students you can utilize a variety of carbonated drinks and have the kids note down which ones explode the most--they should find the diet sodas are especially impressive!
