Pine Cone Bird Feeder Craft for Preschoolers

At Williamsburg “Y” Headstart preschool in Brooklyn, New York the children in Room 4 made bird feeders out of pine cones!

The idea of these bird feeders was to help our feathered friends get through the tougher months of winter with a tasty snack.

Ingredients Needed for the Pine Cone Bird Feeder Craft

To make this pine cone bird feeder you will need:

  • A paper plate
  • Vegetable shortening (or peanut butter can work)
  • A pine cone
  • Birdseed
  • A plastic knife
  • A piece of string
  • Glue

How to Make the Pine Cone Bird Feeder

Begin by putting the pine cone on the paper plate.

Open up the vegetable shortening (like this class used) or peanut butter if you use that instead.

Spread the shortening/peanut butter all around the pine cone with the plastic knife until it is covered.

Pour birdseed onto the plastic plate.Roll the pine cone around in the birdseed until it is totally coated.

Glue the string to the top of the pine cone.

Now you can take it home and hang it from a tree, porch, or anywhere you like!
