Creating Blue Morpho Butterflies
At Little Seeds Children's Center, they were educated about blue morpho butterflies and then created their own out of craft supplies! The children learned how the blue morpho is among the largest butterflies in the world, with wings spanning from five to eight inches. Interestingly the blue morpho butterfly looks like it has a beautiful blue coloring, but it doesn’t actually have any pigment to make it look that way. Instead, they have scales that overlap, refracting light similar to a prism. So, when the light hits the wings, it is refracted against the scales and comes off as blue.
Creating beautiful butterflies
The children loved learning about blue morpho butterflies and then creating their own! They put paint on one side of a sheet, folded the sheets together, rubbed the halves together, then pulled them apart to reveal their cool works! It made some amazing artwork.
