Butterfly Life Cycle

This was a fun activity to do with our 2nd and 3rd graders. We also borrowed butterflies in resin from our local library and examined them with magnifying glasses. We read the Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. We discussed how the author incorrectly called the butterfly pupa stage a cocoon instead of a chrysalis.

Butterfly activities: Make life cycle of butterfly on paper plate, using white beans for eggs, rotini for caterpillars/larva stage, shells pasta glued below a twig for the pupa/chrysalis stave, and bow tie pasta for the adult/butterfly stage. Cut out green leaves from construction paper.

FOR FUN: Wrap a partner in toilet paper to form to replicate the pupa stage. See how hard it is to break out!

If sharing from Biblical worldview: butterflies clearly point to intelligent design by a Creator, the God of the universe. There is no way that the butterfly could have just occurred randomly in nature or by evolution. The butterfly has to have all tye DNA for the caterpillar and for the butterfly in one egg. The caterpillar and butterfly have two totally different structures, capabilities, food sources, etc.
