Learning to Tell Fruits and Vegetables Apart

At A Child's Place Preschool they did a fun activity designed to assist children in telling fruits and vegetables apart. Some are easier to distinguish, such as how we know an apple is a fruit and a potato is a vegetable. Other ones are trickier, however, such as how a tomato is actually a fruit! The kids had so much fun sorting the fruits and veggies!

Cutting the Fruit and Vegetable Cards

The kids were given cards with the fruits and vegetables and instructed to cut them up. The kids did so and then worked together to sort what was a fruit and what was a vegetable for the bulletin board. Everyone discussed why something was a vegetable or fruit and that helped the kids learn how--for example--fruits have their seeds on the inside. It was also discussed how vegetables are sometimes roots, such as potatoes and carrots where the part we eat grows underground! It was such a fun and educational activity!
