Domino Math Activity for Preschoolers

Dominoes are fun to play games with and they are also a great tool to utilize with kids to assist them in learning about math.

At Parsons Family Child Care they came-up with a fun domino-based math activity that is designed to help kids subtize numbers (the ability to see a group of objects and instantly know how many there are without having to count them).

Skills This Activity Develops

  • When doing this activity students will learn about counting with 1:1 correspondence
  • They will also learn about subtizing numbers
  • Combining two numbers will be touched-upon (an introduction to how addition works)
  • They will work at recognizing printed numerals
  • They will understand how one number can be composed of other numbers (such as how the number 5 can be made up of 4 and 1 or 3 and 2)

Doing the Activity

Have wooden or paper numerals of 1 through 9

Given students dominoes and have them grab the numbers that match each halve of a domino

Also discuss with students how these halves can be combined to form another number

Assist students in matching the correct numerals to each halve of the domino and then with figuring-out what the total of each halve would be (such as how a domino with a 2 and a 1 would be a total of 3)
