Nursery Rhymes Activity - Hey Diddle Diddle

We learned the nursery rhyme, "Hey Diddle Diddle," then engaged in a spoon matching activity. Below is the Mother Goose Nursery Rhyme followed by a description of a quick and easy literacy activity! This also encourages social-emotional skills such as taking turns and working together.

Hey, diddle, diddle,

The cat and the fiddle,

The cow jumped over the moon;

The little dog laughed

To see such sport,

And the dish ran away with the spoon.

The bottom spoons were white with capital letters on them. The top spoons were clear with lower case letters on them. The students worked in groups to arrange the alphabet in order, followed by matching to correct uppercase to lower case letter.

Not only is this a fun integration into the Nursery Rhyme Unit, but a nice quiet activity to have on hand as well. I divided the spoons into two Ziploc bags and set them on a shelf. When the children are looking for something to do, want some alone time, need a calming activity or aren't feeling well -- this is a great tool to have on hand!
