Leaf Man Nature Walk and Art Activity
Have the children go on a nature walk and collect leaves, sticks, acorns, and other signs of fall. Allow these materials to dry out, preferably over night.
The following day you can read Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. Make sure to point out all of the different materials that the illustrator has used to make the different animals in the story. Discuss if the book is fiction, or non-fiction and why they think it is one of the other. After reading the book, ask each child to name one animal that Leaf Man became in the story.
Then have the children create their own leaf creatures. You can provide them with a fun colored piece of heavier duty paper. Put out the nature materials that they found from the prior day. You can also add in buttons, googly eyes,
gravel, etc. Give them glue and let them have some fun being creative! Once they are done, ask them to describe what they made and write their words on their projects for them.
