Painting Christmas Tree Ornaments

Shortly before the recent holiday, they painted Christmas tree ornaments at Wythe Presbyterian Preschool! It was a fun activity that provided the children with a beautiful decoration they could take home to hang upon their own Christmas trees (or wherever they wanted). The process of painting the ornament was a good way to build-up fine motor skills too and the kids had a ball covering their ornament in paint! While painting their Christmas tree ornaments the children learned the history of Christmas trees too!

The history of Christmas trees

The history of Christmas trees goes back to the symbolic use of evergreens in ancient Egypt and Rome and continued into the 1500s with the German tradition of candlelit Christmas trees. These were then brought to America in the 1800s by German immigrants. By the 1890s Christmas ornaments were arriving from Germany and Christmas tree popularity was on the rise around the U.S. The early 1900s saw Americans decorating their trees mainly with homemade ornaments and then as electricity became more commonplace so did Christmas lights! You can have your students make their own Christmas tree ornaments and teach them about the history of the Christmas tree when the next Christmas season comes around!
