Citrus Fruit Volcanoes Activity

At Milestones in Jacksonville NC they did an exciting volcano activity with citrus fruit. They took different kinds of citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges, and limes. Then, they put bits of baking soda on the citrus fruits and saw how it caused a chemical reaction that looked like a volacno!

How the experiment works

This experiment works via the baking soda reacting with the acid in the citrus fruits. This is a lot like that famous experiment where you combine baking soda and vinegar to create a volcanic-looking eruption. Using this same scientific knowledge, it was possible to make little volcanic eruptions occur by putting baking soda on pieces of fruit that had been cut open to reveal the citrus fruit. Kids loved seeing the chemical reactions!
