Studying the Molecules in Solids, Liquids, and Gases

At Sunshine School in Oro Valley, they worked on their STEM-skills! The kids studied the molecules in solids, liquids, and gases. Everyone was educated about how molecule closeness can vary depending on if something is in a solid, liquid, or gas form. To gain an understanding of this, the kiddos experimented with water in three states!

Using rock salt to change molecules
The students learned how when rock salt is added to ice this causes a reaction. The salt molecules get between the ice molecules which makes them melt and turn into a liquid. The kids added colorful water as well that had food dye added to see how big the holes were in the ice once the rock salt had been added. The children then discussed how if the water were to become hot (e.g. boiled) it would evaporate and be in an air form!

You can do this too!
You can do this activity by simply freezing water and then using rock salt (or even regular table salt) on the ice. Then, you can study how the rock salt makes the ice start to melt into the form of water!
